One of these destinations includes Leland, which is approximately 40 minutes away from Traverse City. Here you will find a harbor village right along the lake that is home to its famous historic Fishtown district. Leland dates back to the 1800s where you can still find plenty of shanties and docks standing to this day. These historic buildings now house local boutiques, shops, art galleries, and eateries that are all worth checking out. Being a fish village you will want to make sure you try out the local seafood including their famous smoked fish sandwiches. For a little outdoor fun simply hop on the ferry that will take you to North Manitou Island where you can enjoy some remote hiking.

No matter where you look for ideas on what to see around Traverse City, you will always find that Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore pops up. Everyone raves about this local national park area that is only 35 minutes away from Traverse City. Sleeping Bear Dunes gets its name from the sandy dunes that stand tall along the shoreline. You will have quite the trek up the dunes that will reward you with breath-taking views of Lake Michigan. Visitors also enjoy the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive that will let you avoid the hike up but still provide you with incredible views. The lakeshore also includes plenty of beaches and hiking trails that are open for you to explore. Once you are done at the lakeshore you can head just north to find Glen Arbor, a cozy and laidback town that is surrounded by natural beauty. There are various boutiques and art galleries to browse through. Locals enjoy renting out a kayak or paddleboard from the shops to explore the Crystal River. Glen Arbor is especially popular during the summer months as it is perfectly situated right between Glen Lake and Lake Michigan giving you countless ways to relax. You can’t go wrong with the short drive up to Glen Arbor and Sleeping Bear Dunes.

A bit further away from Traverse City is the charming town of Charlesvoix, a picture perfect destination that is especially known for its natural beauty. Specifically, the local architecture of the Mushroom Houses is a popular draw for visitors to the area. Architect Earl Young designed these stones cottages that are a joy to see in person. Charlevoix gives you plenty of lakeside activities as well. Similar to Glen Arbor, Charlevoix is situated between two lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix. The town features plenty of shops and restaurants to check out in between your aquatic activities. The summer season is always a popular time to drive through as the weather is warm and the town hosts several festivals and art fairs.

Another popular destination is Torch Lake that is just about 45 minutes away. The area is known to locals as the “Caribbean of the North,” featuring crystal-clear turquoise waters. This inland lake is approximately 19 miles long, which makes it perfect for all kinds of activities, including kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, or even just swimming around. The sandbar is a popular spot where other visitors will hang out overlooking the lake. As you might guess, Torch Lake is most popular during the summer months when you can take advantage of a day at the lake.
